PARIS 2024: Six Ghanaian boxers compete in Bangkok for Olympic slots

A team of five men and one woman from the Black Bombers and Black Hitters have arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, to participate in this month’s Paris 2024 Boxing Olympic Qualifier.

The team is led by Dauda Fuseini, the 1st Vice President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF). The technical team includes Vincent Akai Nettey (1st Assistant Coach), Elvis Robertson (2nd Assistant Coach), Edward Asante (Team Doctor), and Daniel Quartey (Physiotherapist/Masseur).

Despite participating in two previous qualifying tournaments—in Senegal in 2023 and Italy, in February 2024—no Ghanaian boxer has yet secured a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The team comprises several notable boxers.

Joseph Commey, who won gold at this year’s African Games, is joined by Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey (flyweight), Amadu Mohammed (featherweight), Henry Malm (light-middleweight), and Leicester-based Mark Kodjovi Ahondjo (super heavyweight), who was unable to compete in the last Olympic qualifier in Busto Arsizio.

The lone female boxer on the team is US-based middleweight Ornella Sathoud (75 kg).

Dauda Fuseini, Vice President of the GBF, expressed confidence in Ghana’s chances of securing some slots for the Paris Olympic Games.

The tournament serves as the last opportunity for boxers to earn a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
