Football legend turned Broadcaster Gary Neville has highlighted Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey’s quality as a defensive midfielder while analyzing England’s poor showing against Denmark.

England drew 1-1 with Denmark in The Three Lions’ second game at the ongoing 2024 Euros and the underwhelming performance drew a ton of criticism from fans.

Implying this in his post game analysis on ITV, Neville spoke about England’s inability to create from deep areas on the pitch and noted that Declan Rice doesn’t excel in the defensive midfield position as his Arsenal colleagues Thomas Partey and Jorginho.

“I want to mention a player who we all love 100 percent. Mikel Arteta moved Declan Rice out of that number six position for the last 15 games of the season to bring in Jorginho and Thomas Partey, because he’s not that good at playing there.”

Partey is heading into the final season of a five year deal he signed to join Arsenal from Spanish side Atletico Madrid and captained Ghana’s Black Stars to wins over Mali and Central Africa Republic in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

England have four points in the competition after beating Serbia 1-0 and drawing with Denmark ahead of its last game against Slovenia.
