Ghana’s Joselle Mensah has missed out on qualifying to the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games after placing fourth in Heat 6 of the Women’s 50 Metre Freestyle event.
Mensah, competing in her first Olympics, clocked a time of 26.81 seconds to place fourth behind Elizaveta Pecherskikh of Kyrgyzstan’s (26.26 seconds), Adaku Nwandu of Nigeria’s 26.62 seconds and Mariam Sheikhalizadeh of Azerbaijan’s time of 26.76 seconds.
Mensah’s time wasn’t enough to get her into the semifinals; all competitors in Heat 6 missed out on qualifying to the next stage of the event.
This development marks the end of Ghana’s run in the swimming events at the Paris Olympics in the wake of Harry Stacey’s unsuccessful attempt to make it into the semifinals of the Men’s 100 Metre Freestyle event. (Click highlighted text to read full story)
Stacey’s time of 51.12 seconds had him finish seventh in his heat and miss out on progressing to the semifinals. Stacey and Mensah qualified to the Olympics via wild card slots.
Ghana’s medal hopes now rest on its sprinters after high jumper Rose Yeboah also missed out on qualifying to the Women’s Final.
