Ghana League Clubs Association Chairman Kudjoe Fianoo believes the performance of locally-based players can be assessed based on Ghana’s success in the CHAN competition.
The Black Galaxies, Ghana’s CHAN team, are set to face West African rivals Nigeria in the second round of the qualifiers this December.
The winner of the two-legged tie will earn a spot in the 2024 CHAN tournament, which will take place across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Ghana has yet to win the CHAN title, with its best performances being runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2014.
What have been the performance of the Chan team?
Yes, we are facing some challenges and some local players having brought in. Yes, they’ve not done that badly. But I don’t think that is easy.
If we have the package, you know in the past we used to describe the national team as “GTP”.
GTP meaning that we are bringing players from Greece, Turkey and Portugal.
And if now we have at least six players playing the EPL.
And those players in Spain are also doing very well.
And they come to Canada, they are not doing well.
Then we need to find out what the results are.
They are coming out to see less and play them with the local players.
And I’m saying that what have been the achievement of the Chan team?
What have been the achievement of the Olympic team?
In the lead-up to the competition commencing on February 2025, Black Galaxies Head Coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani has announced a 32-man squad for a pre-CHAN qualifiers training camp in preparation for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers against Nigeria.
The training camp will begin on Monday, November 25, 2024, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
Ghana will host the first leg of the qualifiers on Saturday, December 21, 2024, with the return leg scheduled between December 27-29, 2024.
Ghana previously defeated Nigeria in the CHAN qualifiers to secure a spot at the 2023 tournament, and Coach Dramani’s side will aim to replicate that success and qualify for the 2025 CHAN, set to be hosted across Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
