Member of Parliament for Atiwa East Constituency and a former Deputy Finance Minister of Ghana, Abena Osei Asare has called for players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) to be given more call ups to the Black Stars.
She made this appeal to handlers of Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team in her address on the floor of parliament in the wake of Ghana’s brilliant performance in the latest round of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Ghana beat Chad 5-0 and beat Madagascar 3-0 to move to the summit of Group I and get in line to pick up the group’s sole automatic qualification to next year’s World Cup.
Despite the fine results, the Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, called for more GPL players to be involved in the Black Stars with just three players from the league getting called up to the team.
“My only concern is that, we don’t see a lot of our local players in there (the Black Stars) and that is what we should look at. We should appreciate what we have at home…most of the time, it’s the foreign players we call but yet we have teams, the Kotoko’s, the Samartex and all those other teams who have very good players.”

“Mr. Speaker, we are calling on the National Sports Authority (NSA), we are calling on GFA-Ghana Football Association- and the Minister for Sports to make sure they do everything possible for us to see the local people in the Black Stars as well” she added.
