“I need only committed players” – Kwesi Appiah on Ayews’ exclusion

Black Stars head coach, Kwesi Appiah, has suggested a lack of commitment from Andre Ayew and his brother, Jordan Ayew, is the reason for their constant exclusion from the team.

Jordan and Andre have not received call ups to the Black Stars since they opted out of Ghana’s world cup qualifier against Congo last year.

Jordan said he had a stomach upset while Andre said he was injured, as they pair missed Ghana’s return encounter against the Diables Rouges following a disappointing first leg 1-1 draw in Kumasi.

Appiah’s side subsequently won the return encounter 5-1.

Since then however, the pair have not been called back to the team, despite Jordan in particularly, playing a fantastic 2017/2018 season with English Premier League side Swansea where he emerged the club’s top scorer and was voted the Welsh club’s player of the season.

“If a player says he’s not well or he is injured and won’t be available for a particular match, it is my job to make sure there is another player available to fill the void,” Appiah said.

“I have never had any problem with anybody. The national team is not for me; it’s for Ghana.

“I keep saying that nobody is bigger than Ghana and I’m looking for players who are committed and ready to kill themselves for the nation,” Appiah concluded.

Ghana will face Kenya and Namboole in a 2019 AFCON qualifier on September 8th.

The Black stars opened their qualifying campaign with a 5-0 trouncing of Ethiopia.

They will face Sierra Leone in a double header in October, with the possibility of sealing a place in Cameroon next year.
