“I’ll turn pro but not now” – Olympic bronze medalist Samuel Takyi

Ghanaian boxer, Samuel Takyi, has told Citi Sports he is not in a rush to become a professional boxer, despite seeing his stock rise following a decent showing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The 20 year old ended Ghana’s 29-year long wait for an Olympic medal when he clinched bronze in the men’s featherweight division.

Following his Tokyo exploits, there has been talk of the Atukpai native turning professional in the shortest possible time but he says his immediate focus is on preparing for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

“I will turn professional, but not now,” he told Citi Sports’ Benjamin Nketsia on Citi TV’s The Tracker on Monday.

“For now, I’m preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next year. After that, there’s the 2023 African Games, which Ghana is hosting and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games would follow soon after that.

“So I will definitely go professional, but not now,” he concluded.

Takyi has been rewarded with $30,000 and a car for his exploits in Japan.
