Morocco recently announced the appointment of Walid Regragui as Head Coach to replace the sacked Vahid Halilhodzic as head coach of the Moroccan Senior National Men’s Football Team.

The appointment of the former defender means all five African nations due to compete at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will be led by a countryman.

Regragui leads the Atlas Lions while Otto Addo leads Ghana’s Black Stars, Rigobert Song leads Cameroon, Jalel Kadri leads Tunisia and Aliou Cisse leads reigning African Champions Senegal to Qatar.

Addo, Song, Regragui and Cisse represented their countries in multiple international competitions including the AFCON with Cisse, Addo and Song featuring at the World Cup as players.

Song, Cisse and Regragui are 46 years old while Addo is 47 years old and Kadri checks out as the oldest at age 50; this is the first time all five African nations at the World Cup will be led by a non-foreign coach.

Regragui led Moroccan side Wydad Athletic Club to win the African Champions League in the 2021-2022 season.
