It’s been a challenging season despite GPL promotion – Bofoakwa Tano CEO

The Chief Executive Officer for Bofoakwa Tano, Alexander Ababio has described the season as challenging despite securing promotion to Ghana’s top-flight league for the first time in 16 years.

Their qualification marked a significant achievement for the club, which suffered relegation in the 2006/2007 campaign.

The Sunyani-based side pipped Eleven Wonders 7-6 on penalties at the Accra Sports Stadium to book the final ticket to the top flight next season.

In an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, Alexander Ababio expressed his excitement at guiding the team back to the top division.

“It was an exciting day for us after securing qualification to Ghana’s top-flight league.”

“We have been relegated for the past 16 years, it has not been an easy feeling, a very difficult one, especially splitting the zones into two [ZONE ONE A & ZONE ONE B].”

“Playing against one team four times in the zone, economically, it was not attractive.”

“We had a lot of teams who play in Zone B with Premier League experience, so it was a very difficult zone, but we managed our way through.”

“Our players showed a lot of discipline throughout the season, which proved key in qualifying to the Premier League.”

The Sunyani-based side will join Nations FC and Kpando Heart of Lions who were champions of their respective zones as the three new entrants for next season’s premier league.

With Bofoakwa Tano’s return, they will become the fifth Bono team in the GPL next season.

The others include Nsoatreman FC, Berekum Chelsea, Bechem United, and Aduana FC.

Asked about the team’s objectives for the 2023/24 league season, Alexander Ababio further revealed to Citi Sports, there are plans to re-structure the technical team and also beef up the squad in a bid to be competitive for the 2023/24 premier league season.

“Now, we have to get some recruitment done for the new season, we have to get about five or six players.”

“We have to also beef the technical team up, we have to get a new coach, because the current coach is a license B holder, who cannot coach in the premier league.”

“With all these shake-ups, I think we can survive in the Ghana Premier League.”
