AFCON 2023Q: “It was not the debut I wanted” – Patrick Kpozo

Patrick Kpozo finally made his Black Stars debut in Ghana’s disappointing goalless draw against Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The FC Sheriff full-back received his first national team call-up in March 2023 when Ghana came up against Angola in Kumasi and Tatalona, near Luanda.

The 25-year-old left-back has been a consistent top performer in the Moldovan League and the Europa League for Tiraspol competing in high-profile games against the likes of Manchester United.

He was received by a pool of fans at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium back in March but was second to Gideon Mensah of AJ Auxerre.

However, fate would have it that the FC Sheriff full-back will make his full debut as he came in for the injured Gideon Mensah.

Despite making his debut, Kpozo said not getting a win gave him a mixed first appearance for the Black Stars.

“It was not the debut I wanted because I was expecting us to win, but it did not, but it is okay,” Kpozo said in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports.

According to him, walking onto the pitch in Antananarivo was not nerve rack.

“For me, it was just a normal game I played. I never felt nervous and I am very okay. Before the game, the coach [Chris Hughton] told us the pitch was terrible and that changed our style a bit, but it was okay,” he added.
