Canadian basketball player of Ghanaian descent Laeticia Amihere has described the experience of being the first “Ghanaian” woman to make it into the WNBA as a big one.

She said this in her speech during an appearance on her visit to Ghana at the Summer League Camp organized by Impact Youth Foundation.

Amihere was drafted eighth overall in the 2022 WNBA draft after playing for University of Carolina under legendary coach Dawn Staley.

The 22 year old 6 foot 3 inch Power Forward played her debut season with Atlanta Dream where she played 21 games and averaged 2.7 points and a block across seven minutes.

Speaking at the event, Amihere talked about the difficulty in making it to the WNBA and staying in the league.

“There’s only 144 athletes in the WNBA and it’s a very competitive association, it’s very hard to make it, very hard to stay in it. Being able to hear my name and being the first Ghanaian woman to be drafted into the WNBA I think that’s one of my biggest prize.”
