EPL on Citi: Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag lacks passion- Benni McCarthy

Former Manchester United assistant coach Benni McCarthy has questioned Erik ten Hag’s approach to leadership, claiming the Dutchman lacks the “fire and passion” needed to connect with his players.

McCarthy, who was part of Ten Hag’s coaching staff for two years, left Old Trafford in the summer to pursue a managerial role but recently spoke candidly about his former boss.

In an interview with Portuguese outlet ZEROZERO (via The Athletic), McCarthy reflected on what might be holding United back under Ten Hag.

“In modern football, players want to see more passion in their coach. They need to feel that the coach is with them, ready to fight alongside them,” McCarthy said.

“Tactically, Erik is top-notch, but he’s missing that fire. That’s where we differ.”

United’s disappointing start to the season has left Ten Hag under intense scrutiny, particularly after their 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

The loss leaves them languishing in 12th place, just four points clear of the relegation zone. It’s a far cry from the heights expected of one of the Premier League’s most successful clubs, and fans are starting to ask tough questions.
