Sudanese winger Abobaker Mamoun Eisa has praised Sudan National Men’s Football Team head coach, James Kwasi Appiah, for his impact.

In an interview with the BBC, Eisa spoke glowingly about the Ghanaian coach who led Sudan to beat Ghana 2-0 and record a goalless draw in a 2025 AFCON qualifiers double header.

The results place Sudan second in Group F with eight points with Sudan needing just a point from its remaining two qualification games to book its spot in next year’s AFCON in Morocco.

Appiah won the 1982 AFCON with Ghana as a player and led Ghana to the AFCON twice and 2014 FIFA World Cup; he has a semifinal berth as a coach on his CV and Eisa believes the presence of the former Kumasi Asante Kotoko player has changed a lot for Sudan especially the mental bit.

“He brings a lot of experience and he’s changed our mentality into thinking we could beat anyone. I think that’s the biggest difference that you’re seeing here with the Sudanese team. Everyone knows that he’s a legend in his country and what he’s done for his country.”

“But he’s told us he believes that we could do something big together. We’re going step by step but it is coming to fruition now.”

Since competing in the 2012 edition, Sudan have played at just one AFCON (in 2021) since. They exited at the group stage.
