Brazil and Manchester United winger Antony has opened up on his stint at Man United and its harrowing effects on his mental health.
After struggling to live up to his 86 million pounds price tag and expectations at Old Trafford following his 2022 transfer from Ajax he completed a move to Spanish side Real Betis in January,2025.
In 96 appearances for the Manchester based club , Antony managed just 12 goals and five assists. But since joining Betis, the 25-year-old has scored nine goals and is set to start in the Europa Conference League final against Chelsea.
In a preview of the finals with TNT Sports Brazil, he poured out his heart on his ordeal at United.
“I went through difficult times [at Manchester United] when I no longer felt that pleasure.
I even always told my brother, I told him that I couldn’t take it anymore.’ “Only I know what it was like to be there at home, not having the strength to even play with my son, going days without eating, staying locked in my room.”
“[Coming to Betis] changed a lot because I needed to find myself, because of everything I went through in my personal life,” he said.
“As I said, I wanted to do things, but they didn’t seem to work out because I wasn’t happy, I didn’t feel that desire to play football, and I needed to find myself and be happy again because playing football was always something I loved. he stated.
