Sports Ministry slashes Black Stars budget for Chad World Cup Qualifier

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has announced a significant cut in the budget for Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad in Ndjamena.

The initial estimated budget of $1,239,090 has been reduced to $841,290 following a review of expenses.

The revised budget shows major adjustments across several expenditure lines, including bonuses and incidental costs.

While the $300,000 allocation for a chartered flight remains unchanged, incidental expenses were reduced from $60,000 to $20,000, and player bonuses were halved from $10,000 to $5,000.

Bonuses for team officials were scrapped entirely, while other support staff such as doctors, physiotherapists, video analysts and dieticians saw their allocations cut.

“About 95% or more of your national team players are playing their trade abroad, so we spend on tickets to bring the players from Accra back to their base,” Sports Minister Kofi Adams explained, adding that the cuts were aimed at ensuring efficiency and accountability in team spending.

The decision comes as the Black Stars prepare for a crucial run of qualifiers. Ghana will face Chad away in Ndjamena on Matchday 7 before hosting Mali on Matchday 8 between September 1 and 9, 2025, fixtures expected to be decisive in their push for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
