Real Madrid completed a tough comeback to beat Olympique Marseille at the Bernabeu to commence its 2025-2026 UEFA Champions League campaign on a winning note.
Kylian Mbappe scored twice to wipe out Timothy Weah’s goal in a 2-1 win for Real Madrid in a game that had multiple key talking points.
Both Mbappe goals were penalties with the win being Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso’s first in the tournament he won twice as a player.
Former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up what appeared to be a thigh injury and had to be replaced by Dani Carvajal early in the game.
However, Carvajal got sent off in the 72nd minute after delivering what looked like a head butt on Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli but Mbappe’s goals were enough to get Madrid the win and midfielder Federico Valverde believes that the French star is getting more comfortable in his second season at the club.

“We are happy that he keeps scoring goals and has been feeling more and more comfortable. Our job is to make sure the ball gets to him and that he can have even more scoring opportunities than he is having now” Valverde said per ESPN.
