The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has strongly condemned what it described as “unacceptable behaviour” by players, officials and supporters during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 final between Senegal and hosts Morocco in Rabat.
In a statement released after the match, CAF said it does not tolerate inappropriate conduct during matches, particularly actions directed at the refereeing team or match organisers, stressing that such behaviour goes against the values of fair play.
CAF confirmed it is reviewing all available match footage and official reports and will refer the matter to the appropriate disciplinary bodies, with sanctions expected against those found guilty.
The condemnation follows chaotic scenes in the closing minutes of normal time during the final, which Senegal eventually won 1-0 after extra time.
Among the incidents cited was a brief walk-off by Senegal players and members of the coaching staff in the 98th minute. The protest followed referee Jean Jacques Ndala’s decision to award Morocco a late penalty after a VAR review, coming shortly after a Senegal goal had been disallowed.
Crowd disturbances were also reported inside the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, where clashes broke out in the stands as some Senegalese supporters attempted to enter the pitch and engaged security personnel. Projectiles were thrown, and sections of electronic advertising boards were damaged.
CAF further highlighted misconduct directed at match officials and organisers, describing it as inconsistent with the principles of respect and sportsmanship.
Tensions continued after the match, with the post-match press conference abandoned following hostile exchanges between Moroccan journalists and Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw, leading to a shouting match involving media representatives from both countries.
The match was delayed for approximately 17 minutes before resuming after Senegal captain Sadio Mané intervened to persuade his teammates to return to the pitch. Morocco’s Brahim Díaz later missed the awarded penalty, and Senegal went on to secure victory in extra time.
CAF stated that its disciplinary process is ongoing and that further decisions will be communicated in due course.
