A lack of head coach opportunities in England has pushed Ashley Cole to look abroad — and ultimately back to Italy  as he begins a new chapter in management with Cesena FC.

The former England defender, who earned 107 caps for England national football team, admitted that frustration had started to set in after years of working as an assistant without being given the chance to lead.

“I was getting kind of discouraged by a lack of opportunities,” Cole revealed, pointing to repeated conversations with English clubs that ended with the same response  a lack of experience.

For Cole, that reasoning exposed a deeper problem within the coaching pathway.

“They like to throw the ‘you don’t have experience’ line… but how am I going to get experience?” he questioned, highlighting the cycle many aspiring coaches face after spending years in supporting roles.

Cesana’s trust

After nearly seven years building his coaching résumé, Cole made the decision to take a leap  and Cesena responded with one of their own.

Now in charge of the Serie B side, he has embraced the opportunity with both ambition and humility. He acknowledges that his appointment is not just about football, but also representation, noting that there are few Black English coaches working in Italy.

For him, the move is both personal and symbolic.

On the ground, Cole is already making his mark. Determined to change the club’s trajectory, he has introduced a more intense training approach, implemented video analysis systems, and focused on improving tactical adaptability and control in matches.

Ashley Cole’s method

His arrival comes at a time when Cesena are looking to reset after a difficult run of form, including a poor away record and a lack of consistency in performances.

Cole believes change was necessary  and immediate.

“We needed higher intensity… the style of football had to change,” he explained, outlining a clear shift in philosophy aimed at making the team more competitive.

Beyond tactics, however, it is his personality that is shaping the environment.

Despite his decorated playing career, which included spells at Arsenal FC and AS Roma, Cole has taken a grounded approach to leadership. From helping tidy up training equipment to engaging closely with staff, he has made it clear that no task is beneath him.

“I don’t see myself above anyone at this club… I’ll pick up a cone,” he said, reinforcing a leadership style built on respect and example.

Off the pitch, he is also embracing life in Emilia-Romagna, a region known for its rich culture and deep connection to football. With support from his wife, he has adapted quickly, understanding the importance of community in a smaller club environment.

Cesena, a team rooted in a working-class city, reflects a story Cole connects with — one of hard work, belief, and proving doubters wrong.

And that connection may prove vital.

Because for Ashley Cole, this is more than just his first head coach job.

It is the opportunity he had been waiting for  and the chance to show that sometimes, all it takes is one club willing to believe.
