Uncertainty over new faces in Black Stars squad-Henry Asante Twum

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Henry Asante Twum has revealed that it remains unclear whether new players will be included in the next Ghana national football team squad.

His comments come as newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz prepares to name a provisional squad by mid-May ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking at a media engagement on coverage strategies for the Black Stars organised by the US Embassy , Mr. Asante Twum indicated that the selection process is still ongoing, with the coach yet to settle on key decisions.

“New faces in terms of players? I don’t know. No decision has been firmed up yet. The coach has just taken over. He’s been engaging, he’s been talking.”

According to him, Carlos Queiroz is taking a thorough approach, planning to assess both active and injured players before making final selections.

“I know he has plans of visiting all our players, including even those who are injured. He shared his expectations with me.”

This suggests a comprehensive evaluation process, rather than rushing into immediate squad changes.

While uncertainty remains over new inclusions, one issue is already clear; injuries could influence squad composition.

“The players are ready, but we are bedevilled by some injuries. But we still have a very strong team.”

Henry Asamte Twum also addressed speculation surrounding the technical team, stating that details about the backroom staff are yet to be finalised.

“In terms of the backroom staff, I cannot confirm anything for now because the details will be given at tomorrow’s presser.”

With the provisional squad expected in mid-May and a press conference imminent, attention now turns to how Carlos Queiroz shapes his first Black Stars squad.

Key questions remain:

  • Will he introduce fresh talent?
  • How will injuries impact selection?
  • What tactical direction will he take into the World Cup?
