Ghanaian sprinter Benjamin Azamati has withdrawn from the upcoming CAA Senior Athletics Championships due to a groin injury, according to sources close to the athlete.
The championship is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, May 12 to May 17, with Azamati expected to be one of Ghana’s key medal contenders at the continental competition.
His withdrawal comes shortly after helping Ghana’s 4x100m relay team secure qualification to the 2027 World Athletics Championships after the team placed second at the World Athletics Relays in Botswana.
Azamati’s teammate, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, has confirmed the injury on Citi FM’s sports show Sports Panorama, but insists the team remains confident ahead of the championships.

Yes, he picked up a slight injury ahead of the race in Botswana. He sacrificed a lot for the team when we got to Gaborone because we arrived late. He was already injured, so I told him to ice it and manage it properly. But it will not affect the team. We still have strong options, and with Fuseini back in the team, we are well covered,” Saminu said.
Azamati has been one of Ghana’s standout performers on the track in recent years, making his absence a significant blow to Team Ghana ahead of the championship.
Details on the severity of the injury and the expected recovery timeline are yet to be disclosed.
