England National Men’s Football Team manager Thomas Tuchel has described selecting players to compete at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as tough.

The Three Lions manager announced his squad on Friday, May 22 with his personnel selections generating a host of debates.

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer, Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire were big names omitted from the squad.

On the other hand, there were surprise picks to the squad including Ivan Toney of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahly, and Djed Spence of Tottenham Hotspurs.

Speaking after the announcement, Tuchel confessed that the process of selecting players for the World Cup wasn’t easy and added that,

“It was a lot of phone calls over the last three days, a lot of thinking, deciding, big decisions to make. These tough decisions had to be made before the tournament to not carry them through the tournament, and even if it’s painful for some, I think it was right.”
