Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has revealed that the Government of Ghana has secured 1,000 tickets for supporters ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

With the tournament now less than two weeks away and the Black Stars continuing their preparations with a friendly against Wales on June 2, Adams says early planning was crucial in ensuring Ghanaian fans would have access to tickets for the competition.

Speaking on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda, the Sports Minister explained that the unique nature of the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, has made attendance significantly more expensive than previous editions.

“This is the first time we are trying that and for us as a country, this is the first time we are playing a World Cup in that zone. In 1994 when America hosted, we didn’t qualify so we never took part.”

“And it’s quite expensive and this World Cup is not just expensive by the mere fact of the three nations hosting it or the distance from Accra, Ghana, but it is also expensive even with the tickets.”

“The tickets are really very expensive and they have become even more expensive because FIFA did the pre-order sales. Luckily for us, we managed and planned very well and effectively and we ordered for a thousand.”

According to Adams, Ghana’s early application for tickets helped avoid the higher costs currently facing many supporters seeking access to matches.

The Minister noted that securing the allocation ahead of time has significantly reduced the financial burden that would have come with purchasing tickets at current market rates.

“I believe that is what has saved the situation because if we were waiting till now, it would have cost us huge sums of money to even get those number of tickets to be able to issue to our supporters and fans all over to also partake in the Mundial.”

He clarified that the government’s allocation currently stands at 1,000 tickets, although additional tickets have been obtained through other channels.

“So currently Ghana has only 1,000 tickets for our people, that’s the Government of Ghana, unless people buy in their private capacity.”

“I wouldn’t say Ghana, but the arrangement we have put in place, we have secured a thousand. There are many others who have also secured some, the FA itself has secured some tickets.”

The announcement comes as excitement continues to build ahead of Ghana’s fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, with the Black Stars expected to finalize their preparations in Wales before travelling to North America for the tournament.
