Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva has reached her first Grand Slam final after producing a commanding display to defeat Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the semi-finals of the French Open.

The 19-year-old needed just two sets to seal a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory, improving on her semi-final run at Roland Garros a year ago and booking her place in Saturday’s championship match.

Andreeva will now face either fellow Russian Diana Shnaider or Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the final.

The breakthrough achievement places Andreeva among elite company. She becomes the fourth-youngest woman to reach the French Open final in the last three decades, following in the footsteps of Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters and Coco Gauff.

Victory in the final would also see Andreeva become the third-youngest first-time Grand Slam champion of the 21st century, behind only Maria Sharapova and Emma Raducanu.

On the court, Andreeva was in complete control from the outset, overpowering Kostyuk with her aggressive shot-making and composure under pressure. The Russian raced through the opening set before maintaining her dominance in the second to secure one of the biggest victories of her young career.

The match also carried added significance due to the ongoing political tensions stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Kostyuk has been one of the most outspoken Ukrainian athletes regarding the war and has frequently criticized Russian players who have not publicly condemned the conflict.

As has become customary in matches involving Ukrainian and Russian players, there was no pre-match photo opportunity between the two competitors, nor was there a handshake at the conclusion of the contest.

Despite the off-court backdrop, the day belonged to Andreeva, whose remarkable rise continues. Now just one victory away from Grand Slam glory, the teenager has the chance to cap a dream tournament with her maiden major title at Roland Garros.
