Alvarez, who is competing with an Argentina side that has already qualified to play in the round of 32 stage after just two games at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has attracted serious interest from Spanish giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.
However, Atletico Madrid have maintained a firm stance that the club won’t sell him but Alvarez voiced his desire to leave in a post-game interview after defending World Cup Champions Argentina beat Austria 2-0.
“I spoke with the people at [Atletico Madrid] I needed to speak with, and the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream. It’s not the time to talk about this, but I also can’t hide it. I try to be an honest person” Alvarez said to ESPN.

Alvarez had 20 goals and nine assists in 49 games in all competitions in the 2025-2026 season.

“I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer.”
