Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah is calling for major reforms to the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Constitution, accusing individuals within the football administration of turning the sport into a private business.
The MP who made the remarks on Citi FM’s current affairs show, Eyewitness News, wants the government to intervene, arguing that Ghana should not continue to cite FIFA regulations as a reason for avoiding reforms to the GFA.
“Our football has become an avenue for business for people who call themselves football people. I think the government should step in. We need to reform the GFA Constitution,” he said.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, a member of Parliament’s Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, also alleged that the GFA has been “hijacked” by what he described as a “cabal.”
“Forget about FIFA. It is only in Ghana that they threaten us with FIFA. Go and check the other associations, it is broader than ours. Ours have been hijacked, it’s been seized by a cabal,” he added.
He also questioned the relationship between the GFA and the Sports Ministry, suggesting that political interests could be influencing the administration of football. The MP is therefore calling on President John Mahama to intervene and push for reforms.
“The President should step in. Ghana cannot fund the business of individuals who call themselves football people,” he said.
The comments come amid renewed calls for changes to the administration and financing of Ghana football.
