Alexander Zverev defeated American Learner Tien 7-6, 6-3 on Sunday, September 27, to seal Team Europe’s sixth Laver Cup title and end Team World’s reign after their victory in San Francisco last year.
Europe began the final day with a 7-5 lead and needed two wins from the remaining four matches to reach the 13 points required for victory.
Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik delivered the first win, beating Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-3 in the opening doubles match to extend Europe’s lead to 10-5.
Zverev then held his nerve against Tien, edging a tight opening set in a tiebreak before breaking in the second to move closer to victory.
The German closed out the match to deliver the winning point for Yannick Noah’s side, four years after he last did so in Boston.
Zverev has now secured the winning point for Team Europe four times, also doing so in Chicago in 2018, Geneva in 2019 and Boston in 2021. He has been part of all six of Europe’s Laver Cup victories.
“I haven’t won a match here in two years, so I’m happy that I did it today,” Zverev said in his on-court interview. “Massive credit to the entire Team World. They pushed us all the way again. They were champions last year. This year, we had a great team chemistry, and I’m very happy that we won.”
The victory capped a remarkable year for Zverev, who won his first two Grand Slam titles at the French Open and US Open.
Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Fritz in a dramatic singles match on Saturday, was not required to play on Sunday after Zverev secured Europe’s 13th point.
