Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz says Ghana must prioritise stability and continuity in player selection if the national team is to develop into a consistent winning side.
Queiroz believes constantly changing the squad prevents players from building the understanding and cohesion required to make progress, with the Portuguese coach calling for greater consistency in Ghana’s selections.
Speaking ahead of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia, Queiroz said the Black Stars cannot afford to make wholesale changes to the squad from one camp to another.
“We cannot change the players, seven, eight, nine, 10 players every single camp, because every time we change 10 players, we have to start from zero,” Queiroz said.
The coach used the example of constructing a building to explain why he believes continuity is important.
“So let’s imagine you order me as an engineer to build one building with six floors. So first week I have some workers, we go to first floor, then we change all the workers, the first floor goes down, we start from ground zero.
“Next week ground zero, next week ground zero again, next week ground zero. This is the problem, one of the problems of the national team.”
Queiroz’s comments come after a period of significant changes within the Black Stars setup, including changes in coaching leadership and frequent adjustments to the squad.
The Portuguese coach, who took charge of Ghana in April 2026 before briefly leaving the position following the World Cup and returning in September, believes the national team now needs a more settled foundation.
Queiroz demands collective commitment
For the Black Stars to achieve that stability, Queiroz says responsibility cannot rest solely with the coaching staff.
“We have to create stability and continuity with the players that come to the national team, it is the only way to progress,” he added.
However, the coach stressed that squad continuity must be accompanied by clear communication and commitment from everyone involved.
“But in order to do that, we need clarity, we need clarity in the communication with our players, we need honesty in the communication with our players, we need commitment from the federation, from the players, everybody must be committed to the same goals and same dreams and take responsibilities and take responsibility in the right time.”
Ghana will now look to put that approach into practice when they face The Gambia, with Queiroz seeking a response after the Black Stars opened their AFCON qualifying campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire.
