Former Black Stars player and AFCON winner Mohammed Polo says Ghana must appoint a coach capable of adding value to the players when selecting Carlos Queiroz’s successor.
The Black Stars have been without a head coach since Queiroz and the Ghana Football Association mutually parted ways on October 1, 2026. The GFA and Ministry of Sports and Recreation have since established a five-member search committee, chaired by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe, to find his replacement.
Speaking exclusively to Citi Sports, Polo says Ghana needs a coach who can improve the quality of the players rather than simply rely on what they already know.

“We need coaches who can add value, who can add something to what the players have. Now, the coaches who come there, they don’t add anything. So, it is what the players know is what they are playing.
Polo also believes Ghana’s search for a new coach must extend to the grassroots, where young talents can be identified and developed.
“So, not until we go to the grassroots and find a coach, we need a coach. Today, if we don’t have a good coach, you know, that will develop because the talents are there. But they are limited.

“They need some additional value to grow and progress and improve to the level that we’re looking for.”
