Ghana have dropped five places to 70th in the latest FIFA World Men’s Ranking following a poor start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars, who were 65th in the previous ranking, lost 25.73 points and are now 14th among African nations.
The rankings, released on Wednesday, October 7, were based on 338 men’s international matches played since the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended on July 19.

The matches included UEFA and Concacaf Nations League fixtures as well as 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with the results significantly affecting the latest rankings.
Ghana’s drop follows defeats in the Black Stars’ opening two AFCON qualifying matches. The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia, leaving them without a point.
The poor start also contributed to the departure of coach Carlos Queiroz, who left by mutual consent after winning just one of his seven matches in charge.

The latest ranking setback continues a difficult period for the four-time African champions, who also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars will have a chance to revive their campaign in November when they face Somalia in back-to-back qualifiers. Somalia are ranked 200th in the world.
Meanwhile, Morocco remain Africa’s highest-ranked team at seventh in the world, followed by Senegal in 18th. Côte d’Ivoire are 29th, while Nigeria have dropped four places to 30th.
