West Brom 2-2 Liverpool: Baggies fight back but remain on brink of relegation

West Brom remain on the brink of relegation despite fighting back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Hawthorns.

Danny Ings scored his first Liverpool goal in 930 days and Mohamed Salah netted his 31st Premier League strike of the season to place the visitors in full control. However, Jake Livermore pulled one back for West Brom with 11 minutes remaining, and Salomon Rondon headed the equaliser past Loris Karius two minutes from time.

The Baggies pressed for a winner in injury time, but their failed to breach Liverpool’s defence, and remain on the brink of dropping to the Championship.

A victory for Swansea on Sunday, against Manchester City, would guarantee West Brom’s relegation despite this outstanding fightback.

STAR MAN

Virgil van Dijk was more than a match for the physical presence of West Brom striker Salomon Rondon, dominating in the air against a team who looked to go long very often. This is the kind of match Liverpool would have struggled in before the Dutchman’s arrival, but for 80 minutes Jurgen Klopp’s side were dominant and in control. It was not until Dejan Lovren was introduced that Liverpool decided to forget to defend, thus allowing West Brom back into the game.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

Dejan Lovren was substituted on with just over five minutes remaining, replacing Mohamed Salah. Lovren almost immediately mistimed a header which led to West Brom winning a throw-in, and from the resultant play a corner was won. From that corner, Lovren failed to track his runner, Salomon Rondon, and it was Rondon who scored with a free header to tie the match at 2-2. It was a substitution that had the complete opposite of the desired effect.
