AWCON 2018: Ghana’s preparations in limbo

Citi Sports has gathered that Ghana’s preparations to host the 2018 Women’s Afcon has hit a snag over a lack of finances.

At the official presser to launch the tournament, it was revealed that Government would support the competition with an amount of 6 million USD with a marketing team set up by the local organizing committee also expected to raise the remaining 2 million USD required.

So far, information reaching Citi Sports indicate that no monies have been disbursed for any operations while the said marketing team is yet to be assembled.

Renovation works being done on the various facilities that will be used for the competition have all ground to a halt.

The work on the Accra Sports Stadium which was last reported at 70 percent completion is at a standstill at our last checks.

Also, work is yet to begin at the Presec and Achimota school parks which are to serve as training facilities for the competition.

Even the tournament mascot has been affected by the situation as the official unveiling ceremony for it is unlikely to happen due to the lack of finances.

As things stand Ghana is inching closer to a decision that will see the draw for the tournament being held in Cairo, evidence of the lack of finacial muscle.

With barely 6 months to the start of the competition a number of stakeholders that Citi Sports have contacted are ready to hit the panic button if the situation doesn’t change anytime soon.
