Ghpl week 11: Ashantigold extend lead; Karela thump Kotoko

Ashantigold have extended their lead at the top of the table to 20 points after a narrow 1-0 victory against newly-promoted Techiman XI Wonders at the Len Clay Stadium.

Latif Anabila’s second half strike was enough to return the Miners to winning ways after their defeat to Medeama in the last round.

Newly-promoted Karela United were too strong for Kumasi Asante Kotoko after completing an emphatic 3-1 drubbing of the Porcupine Warriors at the CAM Park in Nzema-Aiyinase.

Left-back Moro Ibrahim curled in a beautiful strike to open the scoring before Burkinabe national Soigna Yacouba pulled parity for Kotoko. But Abdul Ganiu Ismail’s penalty and Maxwell Baakoh’s strike condemned Kotoko to a second successive defeat.

Karela have now moved to second on the log with the victory, 2 points behind leaders Ashatigold.

WAFA‘s impressive turnaround continued with another impressive victory over Berekum Chelsea at the Tema Sports Stadium. Francis Debrah scored an own goal for Chelsea before Evans Obeng pulled parity for the blues. But Charles Boateng’s 5th goal of the season gave WAFA their 3rd straight victory under new coach Abubakar Sadiq.

At the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, Bechem United staged one of the greatest comebacks in Ghana Premier League history after they came from 3-0 to draw 3-3 with visiting Elmina Sharks.

A brace from winger Benjamin Tweneboah and a strike from Felix Addo gave Elmina Sharks an unlikely 3-0 and Sharks appeared to be cruising to a famous victory. But a red card to left back Emmanuel Ampiah changed the tide. Adama Diabate started the comeback before Hafiz Konkoni’s 6th and 7th goals of the season ensured Bechem walked away with at least a point.

It was the afternoon of comebacks as Dreams FC staged one of their own. After Victorien Adebayor scored his 4th goal of the campaign to give Inter Allies the lead, Eric Gawu’s first goal of the season pegged Dreams back. Then Adebayor scored again to give Allies a 2-1 lead but a brace from Dreams captain Leonard Owusu, the first of which a brilliant free-kick and the second an injury time penalty, completed the comeback for the Dawu-based side. Inter Allies have yet to pick a point away from home this season.

Elsewhwere, Accra Hearts of Oak played out a dull 0-0 draw with Liberty Professionals at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.
