U-20 WWC: Princesses’ training tour of Spain cancelled over visa issues

Ghana’s U-20 team women’s team, the Black Princesses’ planned training tour of Spain has been cancelled as a result of visa issues.

Yusif Basigi’s team were expected to travel to Spain for the second leg of their preparations ahead of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in France which kicks off on August 5.

They were expected to play a test match against Spain before their first group stage game against host France.

But failure to secure visas on time to Spain means those plans have been aborted.

The FIFA/Government Liaison team responsible for the country’s participation in international competitions has now announced that the team will continue to camp in Prampram until next Monday when they leave for the tournament in France.

“Everything is on course in France and Monday they will leave for France. Our first match is on August 5 so the important now is that the team heads for France.

“If we are able to leave on Monday, the team will have plenty of time to rest, get used to the weather and probably secure a friendly before the tournament starts,” Dr. Kofi Amoah, head of the Liaison Team stated after a visit to the team on Tuesday.

This latest development is a huge blow for the Princesses who only resumed preparations a few weeks ago as a result of the current rumblings in Ghana football.

The team has also had planned training tours to China and Italy cancelled in the past and will now enter the competition without testing their strengths in any international friendlies.

The Black Princesses have yet to progress beyond the group stages of the competition despite qualifying for every single edition of the U-20 world cup since the inaugural edition in 2010.
