Kofi Amoah heads FIFA Normalization C’ttee to run Ghana football

Reading Time: 2 mins read

FIFA has named Dr. Kofi Amoah as chairperson of a four-person Normalization Committee to run Ghana football.

The Committee will replace the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Committee and will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the GFA.

Former Airtel CEO Lucy Quist, ex-Kotoko Board Member Kofi Dua-Adonteng, and Naa Odofoley Nortey, a board member of the Attorney General department complete the list of members of the committee.

The Normalization Committee, which according to FIFA should not exceed end of March 2019, will have its core duties being to:

  • To run the GFA’s daily affairs and co-operate with the task force once it has been set up by Fifa, Caf and the Government of Ghana;
  • To review the GFA Statuses to ensure compliance with the requirements of Fifa and Caf particularly article 15 of the Fifa Statutes;
  • Once the GFA Statutes meets the requirements of Fifa and Caf, this Normalization Committee will organize and conduct the elections of the GFA Executive Committee on the basis of the revised GFA Statutes.

How did we get here?

On June 7, investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, aired a documentary “Number 12” on corruption in football in Ghana, and some leading figures including FA boss, Kwesi Nyantakyi, were seen allegedly taking part in some corrupt acts.

As a response, the Ghana government asked for the arrest of Kwesi Nyantakyi on the charge of defrauding by false pretense based on utterances he made on the tape.

Kwesi Nyantakyi then resigned from his position as Ghana FA boss and also from CAF.

FIFA also provisionally suspended Nyantakyi for 90 days as a result of the tape.

The Ghana government went ahead to secure a court injunction on the Ghana FA as the first step of a process that was to lead to the eventual liquidation of the Ghana FA under the Companies Act since the FA was registered as such.

World football governing body, FIFA threatened to ban Ghana if the processes to dissolve the FA was not nullified, and after a meeting between the Ghana government and officials of FIFA in Zurich, the two parties agreed to set up a normalization committee together with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to replace the current Executive Committee of the Ghana FA.

The decision resulted in government discontinuing its dissolution case against the Ghana FA in court per FIFA directives from the meeting.

As all of that happened, a freeze was put on Ghana football and that has not changed until present.
