MOYS Inaugurates Technical Committee For The Establishment Of Sports Colleges

The Minister for Youth and Sports Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah (MP) has inaugurated a 9-member Technical Committee to come up with a working document towards the establishment of three sports colleges in the Coastal, Middle and Northern belts of the country.

The inauguration of the Committee, chaired by the Technical Advisor of the Ministry, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu- Ansah is part of process towards the fulfilment of the Government’s manifesto promise of establishing three sports colleges to bridge the gap between academia and industry while addressing the many challenges confronting the sports sector. This will be done in collaboration with the private sector.

Inaugurating the Committee, Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah explained that the setting up of the sports colleges has long become necessary owing to the fact that the country does not have a single college that is accredited to run world class academic programmes to meet the growing demands of the industry.

The National Sports College, Winneba, which was set up in 1984 has the responsibility of training and re-training the country’s human resource in the sector among others.

This situation, the Sports Minister believes is hugely affecting the opportunities that sports industry offer to young people who are desirous to pursue academic programmes in the sector.

Isaac Asiamah expressed confidence in the members to come out with expert recommendation in executing this project. He therefore urged the committee to expedite action on their work, adding “it is my hope that the committee’s working document would be ready in two months”.

Dr Owusu- Ansah, on behalf of the Committee, thanked the Minister for the confidence reposed in them and assured that the committee would work assiduously to bring this vision into fruition.

Other members of the Committee are Mr. Frank Quist, Chief Director of the Ministry, Prof. Reginald Ocansey of the School of Education and Leadership (SEL), University of Ghana, Kwame Amponfi, National Sports Authority (NSA) and Mr. David Agorsor, Director, Policy, Planning, Budgeting, Monitoring and Evaluation (PPBME) of the Ministry.

The rest are Magnus Rex Danquah, Sports Consultant, Mr. Henry Tackey, a representative from the Attorney-General’s Department, Mr. Noah Bagerbaseh Bukari and Mrs Diana Addae from the National Sports College.
