Normalisation C’ttee considers ‘novelty league’ for Ghana football

The Normalisation Committee formed by FIFA to manage Ghana football is looking at filling the lull in Ghana football by creating a novelty league.

The league, if created, will run in place of the Ghana Premier League which has stalled since the end of the first round of matches.

Speaking at the Committee’s first press conference on Wednesday, Kofi Amoah, who chairs the group, said that discussions have already been held with the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) on the creation of the new league.

He however added that, considerations would have to be made to ensure that the clubs are able to handle the financial demands of participating in the competition before it is green-lighted.

“We’ve met with GHALCA, everyone wants to start playing football again. We don’t think the players should be punished unnecessarily for too long. So what we are thinking is a novel competition, and until we raise the money that we need to do it, I don’t want to talk too much about it.”

“The bottom line is that if you look at the cost a club has to incur to participate in the league and if the prize money falls short to the cost of participation, we are impoverishing our clubs.”

Kofi Amoah added that the Committee was also looking at ways to raise revenue for the local game including improving public attendance to games and making the local games attractive to potential sponsors.

“Therefore we have to start thinking of what magnets we can think of to bring [money] into football; increasing attendance at the match venues, improve viewership on television and practice the game in a way that makes it interesting for potential sponsors.”

Normalization Committee named

FIFA named the members of the Normalization Committee in September.

The Committee is chaired by Dr. Kofi Amoah, with Kofi Duah Adonteng Former Airtel CEO Lucy Quist and Naa Odofoley Nortey, a board member of the Attorney General department completing the list of members.

The Committee replaced the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Committee and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the football in Ghana.

The Normalization Committee, according to FIFA should not exceed the end of March 2019.
