Premier League recap: Liverpool hit four to go top, Bournemouth crush Fulham, Newcastle still winless

There were goals galore on an action-packed Saturday in the Premier League – well, unless you were at St Mary’s – and we’ve got you covered with everything that happened.

Liverpool 4-1 Cardiff

Liverpool went three points clear at the top of the table with a thumping victory over Cardiff City at Anfield.

Sadio Mane scored two fine goals, while Mohamed Salah also netted and got two assists, as the Reds leapfrogged Manchester City to the league summit.

Salah put the Reds ahead early on with a close-range finish after Cardiff failed to clear after blocking two shots, with Mane making it 2-0 with a low and hard shot into the bottom right corner.

Virgil van Dijk hit the post and Adam Lallana had a shot cleared off the line as Liverpool dominated, but it wasn’t as straightforward a win as the scoreline suggests.

Callum Paterson scored with Cardiff’s first shot on target to make it 2-1 in the 77thminute, but Jurgen Klopp’s men rallied and scored twice late on, with substitute Xherdan Shaqiri netting his first goal for the club and Mane completing the win with a lovely chipped finish over goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

The Reds will stay top until at least Monday, when City take on fifth-placed Tottenham at Wembley Stadium.

Watford 3-0 Huddersfield

Roberto Pereyra, Gerard Deulofeu and Isaac Success fired Watford to a 3-0 win over Huddersfield to secure the Hornets’ best-ever start to a top-flight campaign.

Watford now boast 19 points from 10 games – bettering their 17 at the same stage of the 1982-83 campaign, where they finished second.

Javi Gracia’s men coasted through this clash in truth, with Huddersfield always game but ultimately outclassed at Vicarage Road.

Now winless in ten this term, the Terriers’ were at times bystanders as their worst start to a top-flight campaign deepened still further.

Fulham 0-3 Bournemouth

Callum Wilson scored twice as Bournemouth continued their impressive start to the season with a victory over ten-man Fulham.

The visitors opened the scoring at Craven Cottage from the spot early on after Wilson was clumsily fouled by Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Fulham had plenty of chances but just weren’t clinical enough, whereas the Cherries took their chances well as David Brooks make it 2-0 with a composed finish in the 72nd minute.

The hosts had Kevin McDonald sent off for a second bookable offence late on, and Wilson wrapped up the win with his second in the dying embers.

It was a fourth straight defeat for 18th placed Fulham, who have conceded 15 goals in those games. Bournemouth are now just a point away from Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Brighton 1-0 Wolves

Glenn Murray scored his 100th goal for Brighton to help the Seagulls to a third Premier League win on the bounce with a victory over Wolves.

Wolves dominated most of the game and were unfortunate not to come away with at least a point.

Murray was a doubt ahead of the game having suffered concussion last weekend, but he was passed fit to play and turned Bruno’s scuffed shot in from close range shortly after half-time.

It is the first time Brighton have won three consecutive games in the top-flight since 1981.

Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle remain winless after ten Premier League games after a goalless draw with Southampton at St Mary’s.

The hosts had the better chances to win the game, as the Magpies’ troubles in front of goal continued.

Mario Lemina went closest for the Saints in the first half when his flick hit the post, while Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka produced a number of fine saves to help claim a point for his side.

While they are yet to win, the draw at least ended Newcastle’s run of three defeats in a row and moved them off the foot of the table courtesy of Huddersfield’s defeat to Watford.

Leicester 1-1 West Ham

Wilfred Ndidi scored a late equaliser to rescue a point for Leicester against a West Ham side who battled valiantly with ten men after captain Mark Noble was sent off on Saturday.

Fabian Balbuena’s first Hammers goal looked like it might be enough for victory when he scored after half an hour. Eight minutes later Noble was sent off for a challenge on Ndidi.

Leicester laid siege to the West Ham goal thereafter and finally made the breakthrough after 89 minutes with Ndidi’s deflected strike making it 1-1.
