2018 Total AWCON: Ghana exits after 1-1 draw with Cameroon

Ghana’s Black Queens exited the Total 2018 AWCON tournament after a 1-1 draw with Cameroon at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Queens needed to either win or draw their game and hope for a victory for Algeria against Mali to get a ticket to the semi-finals.

That looked on course when Portia Boakye scored a free kick from distance in the 31st minute to give Ghana the lead but the lead lasted only ten minutes.

Ghana goalie Asantewaa fouled her opponent in the penalty area under no pressure to give Cameroon a chance to get back into the game.

They obliged and scored the leveller through Christine Manie in the 41st minute.

Both teams especially Ghana tried getting the winner from that point but they were not successful on the day.

While Cameroon made it through, Ghana fell off after Algeria lost 3-2 to Mali in the other Group A game played simultaneously in Cape Coast.

Algeria took the lead through Lydia Belkacemi in the 37th minute but Fatoumata Diarra scored for Mali in the 58th minute.

Algeria made it 2-1 from the penalty spot via Imene Merrouche but the Malians came back again with a wonderful long-range shot from Aissatou Diadhiou in the 83rd minute.

The comeback was fully executed in the 90th minute with a Fatoumata Diarra penalty.

Cameroon topped the group with 7 points with Mali finished second on 6. Ghana had four and Algeria finished with no points.
