Hayford’s competence questioned as Queens face elimination

Head coach of Ghana’s Black Queens, Bashir Hayford, has dedicated thirty years of his life to the coaching profession, but his knowledge and understanding of the game was called into question as Mali, stunned Ghana to win 2 -1 in the ongoing women’s Afcon.

Doubts were raised as Ghana laboured to overcome Algeria 1 – 0 in the opening match and Hayford himself admitted that his team had goal scoring issues.

However the defeat to Mali in the second Group A game has put the spotlight firmly on the man  who is a Ghana Premier League winner with both Asante Kotoko and Ashanti Gold.

When described by a journalist as tactically bankrupt  following the defeat,he had this to say.

“I want you to help me define tactically bankrupt, this phrase has been borrowed and you use it anyhow.

“How can you say that when you saw what the referee has done and how much we psyched these girls.

“When we say someone is tactically bankrupt it means they were not able to put a team together and played without any pattern but we dominated this game,so who is bankrupt.,” he retorted angrily.

The Group A standings following the defeat to Mali is enough to make Hayford himself shudder when he thinks about the possible scenarios.

Cameroon are  likely through to the next round after picking up six points while Ghana and Mali are both level on three points heading in to their final matches.

As it stands, a thin line separates Ghana from elimination and the host and win agenda adopted before the start of the tournament.
