Ghana U-23 head coach, Yussif Abubakar, has passed away at his home in Kumasi after a short illness, Citi Sports can confirm.

The former Aduana Stars and Hearts of Oak trainer died hours after he left hospital, where he received treatment for mild ulcer.

“I’ve been to his Ayigya Zongo home and I’m sad to confirm the news is true,” Collins Atta Poku, member of Aduana Stars’ management team told Citi Sports.

The 60 year old was appointed head coach of Ghana’s Black Meteors who were preparing to face Togo in December in an AFCON U-23 qualifier.

He led Aduana Stars to the premier league title in the 2016/2017 season and subsequently into the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.

He has also managed Hearts of Lions, leading them to a top 4 finish in the 2013/2014 season.

He will be buried on Tuesday afternoon per Islamic rights.
