Dogboe loses world title to brilliant Emmanuel Navarette in New York

Ghana’s Isaac Dogboe lost the WBO Super Bantamweight title to Emmanuel Navarette of Mexico in a very exciting bout in New York on Saturday.

The loss came via a unanimous decision from the judges who scored it 115-113, 116-112 in favour of the Mexican.

The champion, Dogboe, was hoping to defend his title for the second time after defeating Hidenori Otake in August but very early into the bout, Navarette’s reach and power punches started to cause problems.

Dogboe responded with some good displays but he failed to properly bother Navarette. The trend continued even though Dogboe was very lively in the later rounds.

The Mexican’s reach and power punching opened up cuts around Dogboe’s eyes to the point that the Ghanaian could not open his eyes properly at the start of the 12th round.

After the bout, it was obvious that Navarette had managed to box his way brilliantly to the champion.

What the boxers said

Emmanuel Navarette:

“Winning the title was a culmination of all the hard work I put in in the last few months. I was away from my family and I worked hard in the gym.

I will give credit to Isaac Dogboe and I thank him for the chance to fight him but I knew it would be a tough fight and I had to work hard to come away with the title.”

Isaac Dogboe:

“In all things, I give thanks to God. Naverette fought like a true Mexican. I could not stay down even though it was tough in the ring. Champions do not stay down.

We fall but we get back up and keep fighting and that is what I did. We underestimated him a little bit but this is boxing.

At the end of the night, the best man won and I can only congratulations to him. He taught me a lesson. Next time, we will not take anything for granted. I would definitely love another crack at winning back the title.”

Dogboe’s loss was the first of his professional career as he dropped to 25-1.
