Premier League: Liverpool stretch lead, Chelsea thumped

Premier league leaders Liverpool failed to take full advantage of Manchester City’s slip up at Newcastle United as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City.

Jurgen Klopp’s men extended their lead over City to five points after Sadio Mane’s early opener was canceled out by Harry Maguire just before half time.

But after their rivals suffered a 2-1 loss on Tuesday, Liverpool will be disappointed not have pulled seven points clear.

The game was played under snowy conditions at Anfield and the Livepool Manager Jurgen Klopp was pleased with the point given the conditions.

“You saw that the ball didn’t roll really,” said the German, whose side were denied a second-half penalty when Naby Keita was fouled by Ricardo Pereira.

Tottenham Hotspurs came from a goal down to beat Watford 2-1 at Wembley.

After Craig Cathcart’s 38th-minute opener, Spurs scored twice in the final 10 minutes – Son Heung-min, back from the Asian Cup, equalising before Fernando Llorente nodded in an 87th-minute winne

The win moved Mauricio Pochetino’s side to within two points of second placed Manchester City.

Chelsea meanwhile have slipped to 5th on the table after suffering a humiliating defeat at Bournemouth.

Joshua King scored either side of a composed David Brooks finish, before Charlie Daniels added a fourth as the Cherries condemned the visitors to a second consecutive league defeat

The defeat has put further pressure on Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri who locked himself in the changing room with the players for 45mins after the game in an attempt to understand what went wrong.

Crystal Palace gave away the lead to draw 1-1 away at Southampton.

Wilfred Zaha’s first goal since September had given the visitors a deserved lead four minutes before the interval, but Ward-Prowse’s third strike in as many Premier League games earned Southampton a share of the spoils.

Zaha was then dismissed for sarcastically clapping referee Andre Marriner, moments after being cautioned for tangling with James Ward-Prowse.
