George Afriyie: “Hunger, determination key to Ghana’s AFCON success”

Former Ghana FA Vice-President, George Afriyie, believes that for Ghana to succeed in the 2019 AFCON, there needs to be hunger and the willingness in the Black Stars team that will be picked for the tournament.

The Black Stars are chasing their first African title since 1982 despite coming close in 1992, 2010 and 2015 and observers and fans of the team will be expecting a lot from the team when they head to Egypt.

The Black Stars have company in Group F in the shape of Cameroon, Guinea-Bissau and Benin for the opening stages of the tournament.

For Afriyie, who is a member of the CAF Organising Committee for the tournament, Ghana can only do well if the playing body is driven and motivated to do so.

“The coach, Kwesi Appiah, still has some monitoring to do since the European leagues are still in session. He has to do that to get a squad that is capable of winning the tournament.

I have said that he has to go to Egypt with a team that is hungry.

A team that has players who are willing to achieve and write history.

If he does that, I have no doubts that Ghana will be able to do well in this competition.”

Citi Sports checks has revealed that the team will camp in the United Arab Emirates for preparations before flying to Egypt for the competition which starts on June 21.

Ghana’s group stage campaign will begin on June 25 against Benin before matches against Cameroon and Guines-Bissau follow on June 29 and July 2 respectively.
