Founder of the Africa Women’s Sports Summit, Juliet Bawuah has charged women in sports to lead conversations during the competitions they cover.

Speaking during her welcome address at the maiden Africa Women’s Sports Summit, Miss Bawuah encouraged stakeholders to push for women to have lead roles during such events.

Held in Accra at the Alisa Hotel on Wednesday, May 15, the Africa Women’s Sports Summit is an initiative aimed at driving change by advocating for greater female inclusion and leadership in the African Sports ecosystem.

“Whether it is the Nation’s Cup or the Women’s World Cup, the African woman in sports must be seen leading the conversation. It should no longer be said that the African woman in sports is relegated to the background. It should also no longer be said that we got opportunities and did nothing with them.

“The change must start now. In our immediate environments, we must be prepared to be agents of this necessary change. We must push for it even if it comes at a cost,” stated Miss Bawuah.

This year’s event was themed ‘Take Your Place’, and was attended by over 120 participants.

The programme brought together leading female sports names and aspiring ones together, for a day’s session wilhich touched on a number of subjects including career building and branding.

The other speakers were Carol Tshabalala, Usher Komugisha, Nana Aba Anamoah, Madam Lucy Quist and Eva Okyere. It was moderated by Miriam Osei Agyemang.

The event began with a forum, where the speakers shared their experiences in the field of journalism, before participants were split into groups for an up close and personal mentoring session.

The Pan-African event takes stock of the gains made so far by African women in sports, and offer a clear path to fill the gaps.
