NC Special Tier 2: Ashantigold beat Medeama to set up semi final clash with Kotoko

Ashantigold will face Kumasi Asante Kotoko in the semi finals of the NC Special Tier 2 competition after they beat Medeama Sporting Club in the Betway Derby at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi.

Shafiu Mumuni’s 64th minute strike gave the Miners a narrow 1-0 win over Samuel Boadi’s men.

The loss ends any chance of silverware for the Tarkwa-based side this season and have also missed out on an opportunity to play in Africa next season having also exited the NC Tier 1 competition at the group stages.

Ashantigold meanwhile have made their second semi finals of the NC Competitions, having been drawn against Karela United in the semi finals of Tier 1, the winner of which will play in the CAF Champions League next season.

Their opponents in the semi finals of the Tier 2 will be regional rivals Kotoko.

CK Akonnor’s men scaled past Berekum Arsenal in the quarter finals with a hard-fought 2-1 win at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Goals from Kwame Boahen and Naby Keita helped the Porcupine Warriors to a comfortable 2-0 lead before Ebenezer Aboagye scored the consolation for Arsenal. Kotoko, just like Ashantigold, are also competing on both fronts for a title this season. They rescinded a decision to boycott their Tier 1 semi final tie against Hearts of Oak and will now play the Phobians on June 16.

Kotoko will then play Ashantigold in the Tier 2 semi finals 3 days later on June 19.

Elsewhere, Unistar Academy beat Proud United 3-1 away from home to set up an all Division One affair in the other Tier 2 semi finals.

Unistar will face Nzema Kotoko, who ended Heart of Lions’ unbeaten run to claim a famous victory via the penalty shoot out. Nzema triumphed 4-1 on penalties after the game ended goalless in regulation time.
