The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be introduced into the 2019 AFCON at the quarter finals stage.

The technology aid for efficiency and effectiveness during matches will be at work for the first time on the African continent.

The Confederation of African Football has put everything in place to ensure VAR will be from the quarter finals stages of the game.

Souleyman Waberi, the CAF exco member from Djibouti and chairman of CAF’s referee’s commission, told Osasu Obayiuwana of the BBC

“We are very ready. We have used VAR offline (in test mode) for five games in this tournament, starting with the Egypt vs Uganda match.

“Everything has worked well. Refereeing experts from FIFA have checked things and are satisfied.”

The tournament have seen some erroneous decisions by some referees with Ghana, a victim of a poor refereeing decision.

Thomas Partey was judged to have had the ball hit his hand after Dede Ayew beautifully flicked in a cross to give Ghana the lead against Tunisia.

The goal was however disallowed by the South African referee and rather penalizing the Atletico Madrid midfielder for a foul.

Ghana has not been the only country to suffer from poor refereeing decisions in the 2019 AFCON and the inception of the technology VAR will help reduce errors in football on the continent.
