The Confederation of African Football Ghana has placed Ghana in Pot 1 ahead of the start of the AFCON 2021 qualifiers.

The draw for the first phase of the qualifiers was done in Cairo on Tuesday, 24 hours to the 3rd/4th place match of the 2019 AFCON between Nigeria and Tunisia.

Ghana is Pot 1 by virtue of its FIFA ranking in June this year, along with the likes of Senegal, Tunisia, Nigeria, Morocco, DR Congo, Cameroon Egypt, Burkina Faso, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire and Algeria.

In all, there are 5 pots and there will be 12 qualifying groups of four teams each.

In the beginning, the teams in Pot 5 will be drawn to face each other for places in Groups A to D i.e. A4 to D4.

What will follow is the drawing of teams from Pot 4 and they will take up places in Group E to L i.e. F4 to L4.

The same procedure will take place for the remaining pots until all groups are configured.

For Ghana to make it to the AFCON 2021, they will face three other teams in the group across six match days.

The tournament will be hosted by Cameroon after they lost the hosting rights of the 2019 edition to Egypt.
