Lionel Messi awarded 6th European Golden Shoe

Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi was awarded his sixth European Golden Shoe on Wednesday, 16th October 2019 after scoring 36 La Liga goals in the 2018/2019 season.

The award is presented each season to the leading goalscorer in matches from the top division of every European league.

In all competitions, the 31-year-old scored 51 goals in 49 matches, and also contributed 19 assists.

Goals scored in the top five leagues according to the UEFA coefficients (currently Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga and Serie A) are multiplied by two, goals scored in the leagues ranked six to 21 are multiplied by 1.5 and goals scored in leagues ranked 22 and below and multiplied by one.

The European Golden Shoe Award, just like the Balon d’Or and FIFA The Best Award, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated in collecting most of the awards in the last decade.

The Argentine has now won three straight Golden Shoes and six overall, with Ronaldo claiming four.
