The Black Stars B started their defence of their WAFU Cup of Nations with a 1-0 win over The Gambia on Tuesday.
The match was settled in the 65th minute when Hearts of Oak forward, Joseph Esso, found the net with a good finish.
Coach Maxwell Konadu started the match with a strike combination of Shafiu Mumuni and Esso and it was Hearts’ Esso who turned home a low cross to break the deadlock.
However, it was not plain sailing for the Stars as they gave away a penalty in the 83rd minute.
Fortunately for Ghana and unfortunately, for The Gambia, Modou Cham’s kick hit the post and the ball went away.
Ghana held on to find the win and progress to the last 8 of the cup of the competition while The Gambia will head to the plate competition to join the other losers from the first round.
The Black Stars B will face Burkina Faso in Friday’s quarter final.
