Former Chelsea and Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho has been appointed the new head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, hours after Mauricio Pochettino was fired.

Pochettino was fired on Tuesday after a poor start to the season by Spurs which has left them in 14th place.

He had guided Spurs to their first Champions League final five months ago.

Despite turning Tottenham into a consistent top four team in the Premier League and a title contender, Pochettino has been criticised for failing to win any silverware in his time at the club.

Jose Mourinho signs a deal with the North London club until the end of the 2022/23 season

Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy described Mourinho as “one of the most successful managers in football” whose “energy” he believes will be crucial to the side.

“He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

Speaking for the first time since his appointment, Jose Mourinho says he’s excited to work with the players at the club.

“I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

A statement from the club described the Portuguese coach as “one of the world’s most accomplished managers having won 25 senior trophies” who is renowned for his tactical prowess.”

Mourinho last managed in the Premier League at Manchester United where he was in charge for two and a half seasons and won the Europa League and a League Cup title before being fired in December 2018.

Prior to that, he had managed Chelsea on two separate occasions, winning three Premier League titles and other domestic trophies.

He is also a multiple Champions League winner, earning crowns at Porto and Inter Milan.

Mourinho also managed Real Madrid for a spell, winning the La Liga title in 2012.
